Freddy Delgado

Head coach Freddy Delgado was named the third head coach in program history in January of 2014 after serving as the interim head coach after the resignation of Blair Quinn (2011-13). Delgado served as an assistant under Quinn for the 2013 season.

Delgado enters this third season at the helm for the New Mexico State women’s soccer program and seventh season as a Division I head coach.

Last season, Delgado coached the Aggies to a 5-15-0 overall record and 4-6-0 mark in Western Athletic Conference play. The four wins tied the program for most wins in conference play for the young program. The five wins are fourth-most in a single-season for NM State since the program started in 2009.

At season’s end, NM State landed Gabby Campbell, Mikaela Haley, Micaela Milavec and Alexis Reinks landed on the Academic All-WAC list. It was the second-time earning the honor for Haley, while Campbell, Milavec and Reinks earned their first award.

In 2014, Delgado led the fifth-seeded Aggies to an upset 3-0 win over the No. 4-seed CSU Bakersfield in the first round of the WAC Tournament before falling to the eventual champions – Seattle U. That was the first win for NM State in the conference tournament since 2011, the program’s second year of existence.

Delgado guided seniors Jennae Cambra and Layla Todd to Second-Team All-WAC honors in his first season at the helm. Cambra (22) and Todd (20) finished their Aggie careers 1-2, respectively, on the all-time goals list. Cambra wrapped up her career atop the leaderboard with 53 points (22g, 9a) while Todd was second with 50 points (20g, 10a). Cambra also broke the single-season goals record with 14 in her senior campaign.

Prior to his time at NM State, Delgado spent five seasons as a head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock from 2008-12 where he led the Trojans to two Sun Belt Conference Tournament appearances. Delgado was named UALR’s head coach on April 15, 2008.

During his five seasons in Little Rock, Delgado transformed the UALR program into a contender in the SBC. Delgado’s players were also champions in the classroom as his teams earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America recognition for a team grade point average of 3.0 or better all five years. He wrapped up his time at UALR with a 33-64-4 overall record and 15-36-3 mark in Sun Belt Conference play.

Under Delgado's guidance, Jane Picarelli broke both the UALR and the Sun Belt record for saves in a career in the 2010 season after she ended her four years in a Trojan uniform with 480 career saves. The 2010 season also saw unprecedented exposure for Christina Veasley, an Alamogordo, N.M., native. Veasley entered the season as the SBC Preseason Player of the Year and spent the majority of the season ranked amongst the top-100 players in the country, according to TopDrawerSoccer.com.

In his second season at UALR (2009), Delgado and the Trojans made history with the program's first appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game. The 2009 Trojans also made Sun Belt Tournament history by becoming the first No. 8-seed to knock off a No. 1-seed, scoring a 1-0 overtime victory against Florida International on Nov. 4.

UALR followed up its victory over top-seeded FIU by defeating North Texas, 1-0, the following day to earn its first-ever trip to the Sun Belt Tournament Championship game, before suffering a 1-0 loss to Denver in the title match.

As a sophomore (2009), Veasley became the first player in school history to earn First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference and NSCAA All-South Region accolades. She tied for the Sun Belt lead with 12 goals and led the SBC with five game-winning goals. In conference play, Veasley led the Sun Belt with 18 points and eight goals.

Veasley was one of four Trojans named to the Sun Belt's All-Tournament Team in 2009, along with defenders Jacquelyn Paz, Kamiya Merrick, and goalkeeper Picarelli. Picarelli recorded two shutouts during the 2009 SBC Tournament and allowed just one goal over UALR's three matches.

In his first season at UALR, Delgado led the team to its third-consecutive berth in the Sun Belt Tournament. He compiled an overall record of 8-11-2 and a 4-6-1 mark in Sun Belt play. Delgado earned his first career victory on Aug. 29, 2008, as the Trojans defeated SEC member Mississippi State, 2-1, in overtime.

Delgado spent seven seasons as an assistant at Louisiana Monroe (2001-07) and played an integral role in the Warhawks’ success from day one. During his time at ULM, he produced 26 all-conference selections, four Academic All-Americans and helped the Warhawks to a school record 14-6-2 season in 2004.

He was a standout collegiate soccer player at Regis University in Colorado from 1993-97. Delgado then began his coaching career at his alma mater, where in four years as an assistant coach (1997-2001) he helped guide the women's program to the 1999 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season championship and a conference tournament title in 2000.

During his time at Regis, Delgado also served on staff of the Colorado Olympic Development Program from 1997-2001.

Delgado gained additional experience as the head coach of the Colorado Rush U-16 boys’ team from 1999-2001, and served as the club director of the NELSA Soccer Association from 2001-2008. In 2005, Delgado also has his United States Soccer Federation "A" license, the highest certification offered for collegiate soccer coaches.
