LAS CRUCES – New Mexico State guard
Brooke Salas was named College Sports Madness Player of the Week on Monday after leading the women's basketball team to a pair of wins last week, averaging 16 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5 assists to go with a .560 clip from the floor and .400 clip from 3-point range.
This is the first player of the week honor for Salas and the second awarded to an NM State player this season from College Sports Madness.
Salas tore it up from the floor for the Aggies in their opening game against Seattle U. The 5-10 guard went 6-for-7 in the first half for 14 points en route to NM State's 69-54 victory over the Redhawks. Salas was on the verge of recording a triple-double, but settled for a season-high 20 points on seven boards to go with six assists and a steal.
Two days later, the Placentia, Calif., product recorded 12 points against league-rival CSU Bakersfield. The freshman notched eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter to help NM State pull away from the Roadrunners, 86-63, in front of a record-setting 5,034 fans at the Pan American Center.
The freshman has started all 20 games for NM State and is averaging 9.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and leads the team in free-throw percentage (83.3).
The two wins on Saturday helped NM State remain undefeated in Western Athletic Conference Play (6-0) and 17-3 overall on the year.
The Aggies will wrap up the first half of the conference slate this weekend
at 6 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, Jan. 30, at UT Rio Grande Valley. The Vaqueros are currently second in the league standings at 5-1 after falling to Grand Canyon this past Sunday, putting NM State in sole possession of first-place heading into the Saturday's contest.
