Men's Tennis Dominates Balloon Fiesta

The NM State men’s tennis team dominated the field this weekend, winning 4-of-6 singles flights as well as the No. 1 doubles flight.

ALBUQUERQUE – Led by junior Christofer Goncalves, the New Mexico State men's tennis team concluded the Balloon Fiesta in dominating fashion on Sunday as the Aggies won 4-of-6 singles flights as well as the No. 1 doubles flight.

Goncalves and teammate Luis Flores picked up their eight-straight doubles victory en route to claiming their second doubles flight crown in as many tournaments.

Singles play was where the fun came for NM State as it rattled off win after win as the Aggies claimed all but one singles flight on Sunday. Goncalves led things off when he battled back down one set for the 4-6, 6-3 6-1 victory over UNM's No. 1 singles player, Ricky Hernandez-Tong. Stijn de Haan bounced back from Saturday's losses to take down Sean Baklini of the Lobos 7-5, 6-4. UNM's Michael Tran and NM State's Simon D'Alfonso teamed up to win the third doubles flight on Sunday as well.

Sergi Espias didn't back down and has matched Goncalves win for win since the Wildcat Invitational as he captured the singles crown for the third singles flight when he defeated Rodolfo Jauregue 6-4, 6-4. Flores joined in on the party after downing New Mexico's Tran 7-5, 6-3. Enrique Asmar completed the Aggie dominance with a default win in the sixth singles flights.

New Mexico State will now get a week off before it heads to Las Vegas, Nev., for the ITA Regional Mountain Championships hosted by UNLV, Oct. 19-23.
