NM State Sweeps Incarnate Word to Open Season

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Freshman Kelsey Horton hit three home runs in her first four at-bats as the NM State softball team swept a double header against Incarnate Word on Friday at the NM State SB Complex. The Aggies defeated the Cardinals 11-1 in the first game and 8-0 in game two.  
 
Game One
 
Overall, the Aggies (1-0) racked up 15 hits and nine RBI, while Incarnate Word (1-2) had four hits and one RBI. Pitcher Karysta Donisthorpe captured her first win of the season as she amassed five strikeouts in 10 batters faced.
 
NM State jumped out to an early lead as Rachel Rodriguez scored off an Emma Adams double. With bases loaded, Horton then hit a grand slam in her first at-bat as an Aggie, followed by a home run from Tatum Reedy. Haley Nakamura, Victoria Castro and Brenna Nakamura each scored to give NM State a 9-0 advantage after the first inning.
 
The Cardinals scored their first run in the top of the fourth, but Horton added another home run in the bottom of the inning. Amy Bergeson also scored on the play to give Horton her sixth RBI of the game as the Aggies took an 11-0 lead.  
 
Game Two
 
NM State amassed eight runs and eight RBI on nine hits in game two. Adams racked up three RBI, while Horton and Corrin Green each had two RBI. Makayla McAdams pitched four innings where she allowed just four hits and had two strikeouts in 15 batters faced.
 
Rodriguez gave NM State a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Horton then hit her third home run of the day. This time, the 2 RBI hit came in the first inning and gave the Aggies a 3-0 advantage.
 
In the third inning, Horton's single was followed by Green's 2 RBI home run to give the home team a 5-0 lead. The Aggies added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Nakamura, Castro and Rodriguez crossed the plate for a final score of 8-0 in game two.
 
The Aggies play again tomorrow as they face UTEP at 3:00 p.m. at the NM State Softball Complex.
