LAS CRUCES – New Mexico State women's basketball guard
Brooke Salas took home both the Western Athletic Conference and College Sports Madness Player of the Week honors on Monday.
Â
This is the first WAC Player of the Week honor for Salas and the second CSM weekly award in her young career. This marks the third player of the week honor for NM State this season from the conference and third from College Sports Madness as well.
Â
The 5-10 freshman set a new season-high on Saturday, scoring 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting to go with eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. She did all that and committed just one turnover in 35 minutes of action for the Aggies.
Â
Her game-high 22 points also led the Aggies to a 76-63 win over Chicago State at home. Of her 22 points, 15 came in the second-half for Salas. She also gave the Aggies a spark at the start of the third quarter, scoring 10-straight points for NM State.
Â
The win on Saturday also helped the Aggies clinch at least a share of the Western Athletic Conference title, marking the first time NM State has recorded back-to-back regular-season championships since the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons.
Â
NM Still will look to clinch the WAC regular-season title outright this week on the road against CSU Bakersfield (Feb. 18) and Seattle U (Feb. 20). A win against either team will clinch the title outright for the Aggies and give them the No. 1-seed in the WAC Tournament (March 9-12).
