HUMBLE, Texas – The New Mexico State Aggies posted an opening team round of 306 on Friday to stand 14th after the first round of the All-American Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Houston.
The Aggies were led by junior
Luis Medina of Guadalajara, Mexico/Montverde Academy and freshman
Davis Chung of Las Cruces, N.M./High on day one.
Medina fired a first round 2-over-par 74 in first day action, while Chung added a 3-over 75 on the par 72, 7,096-yard Golf Club of Houston layout. Medina is tied for 30th, one stroke out of the crowded Top 20, while Chung is 34th in the 90-man field.
Senior
Kenneth Fadke II of Hobbs, N.M., carded a 6-over 78, while sophomores
Isaac Merry of Las Cruces, N.M./Onate and Mike McGilton of Chandler, Ariz./Perry each recorded 7-over 79.
Tournament co-host Houston jumped out to a commanding lead in the first round, posting a team score of 10-under 278, 12 strokes better than South Carolina at 290 in second and 15 ahead of SMU in third at 293.
Houston's Papito Gonzalez and Charleston Southern's R.J. Keur hold the individual lead after scorching the course with a 5-under 67. Houston's Blair Hamilton is third a stroke back at 4-under 68.
Round two of the tournament is Saturday morning with the Aggies partnered with Northern Illinois and Charlotte. The teams start off the 10th tee beginning at 8:45 Mountain.
