Victoria Castro scored on an
Emma Adams hit in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the rally fell short for the NM State softball team as they dropped a 3-2 decision to USC Upstate on Friday in the first game of the USF Under Armour Showcase.
The Aggies (17-9) scored two runs and had two RBIs on six hits. Adams and
Haley Nakamura led the team with one hit and one RBI each.
Kayla Green pitched 4.0 innings and collected three strikeouts in 19 batters faced.
USC Upstate (20-2) scored three runs and had one RBI on eight hits. Holly McKinnon pitched 7.0 innings and had three strikeouts in 30 batters faced.
With USC Upstate leading 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Brennalyn Nakamura hit a single up the middle and
Nue Sivia was walked as a pinch hitter to put runners on first and second. Castro re-entered for Sivia and advanced to second as
Rachel Rodriguez reached first on a fielder's choice. Adams then singled up the middle to score Castro, but the rally fell just short as the Aggies fell 3-2.
The Spartans took the lead first. Kendsey Chappelear hit a single to third base and stole second. She advanced to third and scored on an Aggie error. In the top of the second inning, Amy Syzamanowski singled to right field and advanced to third as Karla Beasley hit a double down the left field line. Kristen Wright entered as a pinch runner for Beasley. Wright advanced to third and Szymanowski scored on a wild pitch. Wright then scored as Abbie Millete hit a double to left center.
The Aggies cut into the lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Tatum Reedy hit a single to shortstop and
Misty Hoohuli entered as a pinch runner.
Fahren Glackin hit a bunt single to first base to move Hoohuli to second. The runners then advanced as B. Nakamura grounded out. H. Nakamura then hit a single to left field to score Hoohuli to leave the Spartans with a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Megan Obier reached first on an error and advanced to second as Chappelear hit a single to shortstop. Obier moved to third as Ansley Gilstrap grounded out. Adams then caught a line drive by Brittany Case and turned it into a double play as she tagged out Obier.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Rodriguez hit a single to third base and stole second base for her 19th stolen base of the season. Rodriguez moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Adams, but was left stranded.
