LAREDO, Texas – New Mexico State senior
Kenneth Fadke II chalked up his second consecutive top-10 finish in leading the Aggies at the weather-shortened Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club.
Â
A senior from Hobbs, N.M., Fadke completed the storm-interrupted first round with a 1-under-par 71. He then toured the par 72, 7,375-yard Laredo Country Club with a 3-under 69 in the concluding round for a 36-hole total of 4-under 140 to tie for eighth.
Â
Storms and rain on Friday kept the players from completing the first round and shortening the scheduled three-round event to two. The teams played the remaining holes on Saturday in outstanding weather conditions.
Â
Fadke recorded five birdies in his final round on Saturday, including a two on the par 3 seventh hole that was his final hole of the day.
Â
As a team, NM State posted a first round 6-over 294 and came back with a final round 1-under 287 to place 13th overall at 5-over 581. The Aggies were two strokes behind 10th place Notre Dame at 579 and one in back of the 11th place tie of UTEP and Louisiana-Monroe at 580.
Â
Baylor won the event with a team score of 20-under 556, with Houston second at 564 and Rice third at 567.
Â
In addition to Fadke's play, the Aggies got a 1-over 145 from sophomore Mike McGilton from Chandler, Ariz./Perry. McGilton's first round even par 72 and final round 1-over 73 placed him in a tie for 40th in the tightly bunched field.
Â
Sophomore
Isaac Merry of Las Cruces, N.M./Onate opened with a 5-over 77, but made a strong turnaround posting a 3-under 69 to finish at 2-over 146. Freshman
Davis Chung of Las Cruces, N.M./High carded a 6-over 150 with rounds of 74 and 76. Junior
Luis Medina of Guadalajara, Mexico/Montverde Academy added a pair of 77s to close at 10-over 154.
Â
Playing as an individual and not counting in the team score, senior
Joey Martinez of Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge, joined McGilton in the tie in 40th at 1-over 145 with rounds of 72 and 73.
Â
Louisiana-Lafayette's Haraldur Magnus won the individual honors by firing rounds of 66 and 68 for a 10-under 134, three strokes ahead of a four-way tie for second at 7-under 137.
Â
NM State is back in action on March 21st and 22nd at the Lone Star Intercollegiate hosted by UTSA at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course in San Antonio.
