Box Score 2 CLEARWATER, Fla. –
Fiana Finau went 4-for-5 in two games as the NM State softball team defeated Detroit Mercy 10-0 and topped East Carolina 7-3 on the second day of the USF Under Armour Showcase at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
Game One The Aggies (19-10) scored 10 runs and collected nine RBIs on 10 hits against Detroit Mercy. Horton scored two runs and had two RBIs on two hits.
Kayla Green pitched 5.0 innings and threw three strikeouts in 19 batters faced.
Detroit Mercy (6-18) had four hits. Samantha Wolschleger pitched 1.1 innings and allowed six hits and seven runs in 12 batters faced.
After retiring Detroit Mercy in order, the Aggies took the lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Kelsey Horton singled to right field before Finau hit a two-RBI home run over right field to give NM State a 2-0 advantage.
NM State extended the lead in the second inning.
Alexis Maynez hit a single down the left field line.
Lucy Mendoza then hit a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Rachel Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice as Mendoza advanced to third and Maynez scored. Rodriguez then stole second to put runners on second and third.
Emma Adams singled down the left field line and advanced to second on the throw as Mendoza and Rodriguez scored. Horton tripled down the left field line to score Adams. Horton scored on an illegal pitch before
Fiana Finau was walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Finau then scored as
Amy Bergeson hit a single up the middle as the Aggies took an 8-0 advantage after two innings.
The Aggies added two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mendoza reached on an error and advanced to third as Rodriguez singled to right field. Rodriguez then stole second. Mendoza scored and Rodriguez advanced to third as Horton grounded out. Glackin singled to center field to score Rodriguez to give NM State a 10-0 victory.
Game Two NM State scored seven runs and racked up seven RBIs on nine hits against ECU. Finau had three hits and four RBIs.
Karysta Donisthorpe pitched 5.0 innings and had six strikeouts in 22 batters faced.
East Carolina (15-11) scored three runs and had three RBIs on five hits. Mary Williams pitched 7.0 innings and had three strikeouts in 32 batters faced.
The Aggies took the lead in the top of the first inning. Adams reached first on catcher's interference and advanced to third as Horton hit a double to right center. Finau then hit a single to left field to score Adams and Horton as NM State took a 2-0 advantage.
The Pirates evened the score in the bottom of the first inning. Megan Quick and Nicole Cheek were walked. Karlie Smith then hit a double to right center to score Quick and Cheek.
NM State re-gained the lead in the top of the fourth.
Tatum Reedy hit a double up the middle and
Amy Bergeson entered as a pinch runner. Bergeson advanced to third as
Fahren Glackin grounded out.
Nue Sivia then hit a single to third base to score Bergeson as the Aggies took a 3-2.
ECU tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ciara Ervin hit a single to right field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a fly out. Casey Alcorn then hit a ground rule double to score Ervin and knot the game at 3-3.
The Aggies took the lead again in the top of the seventh inning. B. Nakamura hit a single to left field, H. Nakamura hit a bunt single to the pitcher and Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Adams then hit a sacrifice fly to score B. Nakamura. Rodriguez and H. Nakamura scored as Horton hit a double down the left field line. Finau then hit a ground rule double to right field to score Horton as NM State captured a 7-3 lead.
The Aggies take the field again tomorrow as they face Maine at 7:00 a.m. MT in their final game of the USF Under Armour Classic.
