Macias leads Aggies to Fifth at MountainView Collegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. – New Mexico State senior Viviana Macias fired a 3-under par-69 in the final round to help lead the Aggies to a fifth place finish at the MountainView Collegiate on Saturday at the MountainView Golf Club.

Macias finished at 1-under 215 for the 54-hole tournament, placing eighth and one stroke out of a three-way tie for fifth.

As a team, the Aggies posted a 3-over 291 to finish at 13-over 877, two strokes behind No. 22 Missouri in fourth. NM State was a stroke better than UTSA in sixth at 878 and three better than No. 44 Ohio State at 880.

No. 7 Georgia won the tournament with a 5-under 859 team score, with No. 16 Iowa State second at 2-over 866, No. 43 Purdue third at 10-over 874 and No. 22 Missouri fourth at 11-over 875.

"We are hitting the ball very well right now," said NM State head coach Jackie Booth. "We struggled with making our birdie putts this week. The team is getting better every week and showed some great play against some very strong teams."

Vivi Macias, a senior from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, fired a bogey free round Saturday for the Aggies on the par 72, 6,227-yard MountainView course, tallying birdies on three par 4s, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 16. She shot a 2-over 74 and an even-par 72 on Friday. It's her fourth Top 10 finish this season and the first of the spring.

Junior Camille Orito from Fresno, Calif./Clovis West, notched a Top 20 finish with her total of 3-over 219 for a tie for 17th. Orito carded a 2-over 74 in the final round to go with the 72-73 she shot in the first two rounds on Friday. It was her third Top 20 finish of the season.

Senior Kacey Dalpes of Alamogordo, N.M., shot a 3-over 75 in the final round to join her 76 and 73 for an 8-over 224.

junior Valeria Macias of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, tallied a 1-over 73 in the final round for a 228 total, while sophomore Kennedie Montoya of Thatcher, Ariz., recorded a 78 for a 231 finish.

Georgia's Jillian Hollis won the individual title with an 11-under 205. Iowa State's Chayanit Wangmahaporn was second at 6-under 210 and Georgia's Bailey Tardy and Texas State's Lora Assad tied for third at 3-under 213.

"We were very pleased with the ladies determination, course management and fight to post some low scores," Booth added.

The Aggies, ranked 75th by Golfstat heading into the tournament, will be off for a couple of weeks before heading to Dallas to play in the Dallas Athletic Club/SMU invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 1-2.
