LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State forward
Pascal Siakam was named to the 2016 Lou Henson All-America Team on Friday as a finalist for the Lou Henson National Player of the Year.
Â
The Lou Henson Award is presented to the top mid-major player in the nation by CollegeInsider.com
Â
Siakam is one of the 31 players selected to the team. The 6-9 sophomore from Douala, Cameroon who led the Aggies (23-11, 13-1) to their second consecutive Western Athletic Conference Championship and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament, was named an honorable mention AP All-American earlier this week.
Â
The unanimous WAC Player of the Year, Siakam has also been chosen first team All-WAC, to the WAC All-Defensive Team, to the NABC All-District 6 first team and to the USBWA All-District VIII team.
Â
Siakam leads the nation with 27 double-doubles, ranking eighth in rebounding with 11.6 boards per game and 26th in scoring with 20.3 points per contest. He is the only player in NCAA Division I averaging a double-double that averages 20 points a game. Siakam is also ranked 32nd with 2.24 blocked shots per game.
Â
Siakam was also named WAC Player of the Week an unprecedented five times this season.
Â
Now in its seventh year, the Lou Henson Award honors National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame coach and Aggie legend Lou Henson who directed both NM State and Illinois to the Final Four in his illustrious 41-year coaching career. With a career record of 779-412, the 1955 NM State graduate is currently 11th all-time in career Division I victories, and was sixth on that list when he fully retired from the floor in January of 2005. Henson is one of now 13 coaches to take two teams to the Final Four.
Â
Henson is the all-time winningest coach at both New Mexico State and Illinois after starting his career at Hardin-Simmons.
Â
The Henson Award will be announced on Monday at the CollegeInsiders.com Award presentation in Houston.
