Aggies 11th, Macias Top 20 at Red Raider Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas – Led by senior Viviana Macias, the New Mexico State Aggies moved up one spot to finish 11th at the 2016 Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational at The Rawls Course on Saturday.
 
The Aggies collected a final round 304 for a total of 907 for 11th, 14 strokes ahead of Cal Poly at 921 and just two behind Texas State that placed 10th at 905. The Aggies 304 was the third lowest score for the final round.
 
Macias, the senior from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, played another steady round on the par 72, 6,541-yard Rawls Course with a 2-over-par 74 on Saturday. She was even par through her 17 holes, but suffered a double-bogey six on the par 4 11th, her last of the day. Macias finished at 7-over 223 in a tie for 18th. It was her sixth top 20 finish of the year.
 
Senior Kacey Dalpes of Alamogordo, N.M., and junior Valeria Macias of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico finished tied for 36th just four behind Vivi Macias at 227. Dalpes had the second best round of the Aggies on Saturday with a 4-over 76, while Vale shot a 5-over 77.
 
Junior Camille Orito from Fresno, Calif./Clovis West, posted her best round of the tournament with a 5-over 77 to finish at 235. Sophomore Kennedie Montoya of Thatcher, Ariz., added an 83 in the final round for a total of 236.
 
Host Texas Tech vaulted from fourth to win the tournament on its home course. The No. 26 Red Raiders posted a 1-under 287 on Saturday for tournament total of 3-over 867, 13 strokes better than No. 41 Purdue at 880. Kansas was third at 881, Kansas State fourth at 889 and first day leader No. 25 BYU fifth at 890.
 
Kansas' Yupaporn Kawinpakorn won the individual competition for the second week straight. Kawinpakorn shot an even-par 72 in the final round for a 7-under 209 to edge Texas Tech's Sarah Brown whose 4-under 68 brought her to 6-under 210. Purdue's Anna Appert Lund was third at 2-under 214.
 
The tournament was the final competition for NM State before the WAC Championship April 22-24. The Aggies are out to defend their back-to-back WAC Championships at the Semiahmoo Resort in Blaine, Wash.
