LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State head track & field coach
Orin Richburg has been selected to lead the United States U20 track & field team in Bydgoszcz, Poland, for the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships, July 19-24.
Â
"You're selected by your peers and you always want to see how your peers perceive you in a profession that you have been involved in for a long period time," said Richburg of the honor. "It's nice to know I'm in a good light with my peers because of all the different things I've done with USA Track & Field. It's an honor for me to be chosen to lead the US team this summer."
Â
Richburg, who has been involved with USATF since 1989, is no stranger to leading the national team into competition. He's been to two Olympiads, 15 world championships – indoor and outdoor – and four Pan American Games to name a few. Richburg's experience casts a wide net, having served both as a head coach and assistant coach at multiple international competitions for the junior and senior teams.
Â
The NM State head coach has also been a member of the selection committee the last two cycles when choosing coaches to lead USATF at the Olympics, world championships and Pan Am Games. Richburg has also been the sprint coordinator for the senior national team since 1995.
Â
Outside of coaching his team to the best possible finish in Bydgoszcz, Richburg was very adamant about being able to provide a mentorship for the junior athletes.
Â
The last IAAF World Junior Championships were held in Eugene, Ore., back in 2014 at Historic Hayward Field where the United States led all countries with 11 gold medals for a total of 21 – five more than second-place Kenya.
