Men's Tennis Headed to Lubbock for NCAA Tournament

The NM State men’s tennis team is headed for Lubbock, Texas, to face No. 8 Texas Tech in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The two-time Western Athletic Conference champion New Mexico State men's tennis team is headed to Lubbock, Texas, for the NCAA Tournament and slated to square off against Texas Tech on Saturday, May 14, at noon (MT).

The first and second round of the tournament is hosted by Texas Tech, who is the No. 8 overall seed. Washington out of the Pac-12 Conference and SMU out of the American Athletic Conference are the other two teams on Lubbock side of the bracket. All matches are set be played at the McLeod Tennis Center on the campus of Texas Tech University.

Should the Aggies advance, the second round match is scheduled for Sunday, May 15, at noon (MT).

This is the first time in program history that the Aggies have earned back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament and only the fourth time in NM State history (1997, 2000, 2015).

The Red Raiders finished the regular-season 27-5 and 4-1 in Big 12 play. TTU advanced to the second-round of the Big 12 Tournament last weekend before falling to then fifth-ranked TCU in Stillwater, Okla. Texas Tech was also 9-4 on the year against nationally ranked foes.

On the other side of the bracket are the Huskies, who finished 17-9 overall and 3-4 in Pac-12 play. Against ranked opponents, Washington was 6-9. Squaring off against UW are the Mustangs of SMU, who wrapped up their season 20-8 overall and 3-1 in AAC play.

Sophomore Christofer Goncalves paces the Aggies with a 23-9 overall singles record and 13-7 mark in dual play – including a 5-0 record in conference play. Goncalves has won his last 10 singles contests, and will put that winning-streak on the line in Lubbock.

Freshmen Enrique Asmar (20-12) and Stijn de Haan (20-12) are next on the wins category with 20 wins apiece while senior Liam Goldberg sits right behind them with a 19-8 mark in singles action. Strahinja Trecakov (16-17) and Mauri Benitez (16-10) round out the double-digit winners for NM State with 16 wins apiece.

Tickets at the Lubbock site will cost $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students (with valid ID) and youth (2-18).
