Voice of the Aggies to Receive the Mayor's Distinguished Service Award

LAS CRUCES – Veteran radio newscaster, longtime NM State play-by-play broadcaster and "Voice of the Aggies," Jack Nixon will be receiving the Mayor's Distinguished Service Award on Monday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. during the Las Cruces City Council Meeting inside City Hall located on 700 N. Main St.

Nixon is entering his 37th year as the "Voice of the Aggies," and has been on the call for various sports at New Mexico State during his time in Las Cruces. His tenure at NM State saw him call many important moments in Aggie Athletics history, including NCAA Tournament broadcasts for men's and women's basketball, volleyball and softball. Nixon was inducted into the US Bank/NM State Athletics Hall of Fame back in 2004.

He's won the National Sportscaster and Sportswriters Association "Sportscaster of the Year" award (1979, 2011) for the state of New Mexico twice and is the first sportscaster to earn the honor outside of Albuquerque. Nixon is also a four-time New Mexico Broadcasters Association Newscaster of the Year and a three-time NMBA Sportscaster of the Year honoree.

Nixon has been very active in the community since moving to Las Cruces as well. He was a board member of the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) from 2001-03 and is in his seventh year as a volunteer at the Mesilla Valley Hospice.
