@NMStateMTEN Set to host Aggie Invitational

The NM State men’s tennis team looks to start the 2016-17 off on the right foot when it hosts the Aggie Invitational Friday-Sunday.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men's tennis team kicks off its 2016-17 season this weekend when it hosts the Aggie Invitational, Sept. 16-18. The three day tournament features Abilene Christian, Arizona Christian and Western New Mexico.

The Aggie Invitational will begin with doubles action on Friday, Sept. 16, at 9 a.m. and finish with singles play. Regardless of the result, those advancing in the main draw or consolation draw will play their second doubles match at 10 a.m. tentatively. Singles action is schedule to start at noon, with the second match scheduled to continue begin at 4 p.m.

Last year at the tournament, Enrique Asmar and Christofer Goncalves each won their respective singles flight with Asmar beating out teammate Stijn de Haan for the flight title. In doubles action, Asmar teamed up with Nicholas Spring and captured their doubles flight over teammates Liam Goldberg and Strahinja Trecakov.

Arizona Christian finished last season 7-15 overall and fell to Lewis-Clark State College 5-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship semifinal.

Abilene Christian went 19-9 overall last year in dual play and 3-2 in Southland Conference matches. The Wildcats were 5-8 when playing on the road and 9-0 in neutral matches during the dual season. They also wrapped up their season with a doubles title at the 116th Ojai Valley Tournament behind the play of Henry Adams and Jason Proctor.

Western New Mexico returns all seven players from last year's squad that went 15-9 and 4-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs fell to the Aggies in the dual season 7-0 and then 6-1 later on in the season, but were able to defeat Arizona Christian 6-3. They also went on to win their seventh-straight RMAC Tournament title with a 5-2 victory over Colorado Mesa.
