LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State men's tennis team enjoyed success in singles action after one day of action at the 2016 Aggie Invitational. The Aggies had six players advanced to the quarterfinals and one doubles team moving on to the semifinals.
 
NM State had a good start to the tournament with all four of its doubles teams moving on to the quarterfinals, including the duo of Christofer Goncalves and Luis Pliego Flores who had a bye in the opening round. However, in the semifinal, NM State's team of Goncalves and Flores was the only group to advance when they took down Abilene Christian's team, 8-5.
 
After the completion of doubles play, the teams began their singles matches with Goncalves and Stijn de Haan earning a bye in the round of 32. Not counting the two that earned a bye in the opening round, the other six Aggie players defeated their opponents to reach the round of 16.
 
After sitting out with a first-round bye, Goncalves downed Western New Mexico's Liam Frabulet 6-1, 6-2. Mauri Benitez also advanced in the main singles draw with his 6-3, 6-4 victory over ACU's Cole Lawson.
 
Flores was the fifth player to advance when he bounced Arizona Christian's Alberto Lapeidra 6-3, 6-4. De Haan gave the Aggies their sixth player advancing to the quarterfinals when defeated Sasha Brechtel of Western New Mexico 6-4, 6-2.
 
Day two of the Aggie Invitational is schedule to begin at nine a.m. with doubles action and follow with singles action.
