LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Sophomore
Stijn de Haan won the singles crown at the 2016 Aggie Invitational after a hard-fought three-set match on Sunday at the NMSU Tennis Center.
Â
The Veldhoven, Netherlands, product lost the first set 7-5 to Goncalves, but stood resilient as he rallied for two points in the second set to force a third set. The third set wasn't any different from the first set as both players exchanged points until de Haan pulled off the 7-6 victory.
Â
Goncalves was able to get some rest after his singles match with de Haan before the junior and new teammate, Luis Pliego Flores, fell Western New Mexico's Jean Laurent Pageault and Liam Frabulet in the third-place match in doubles action.
Â
In an effort to not have NM State players playing each other,
Enrique Asmar squared off against Abilene Christian's Paul Domanski while Flores battled WNMU's Pablo Santibanez. Asmar secured the 7-6, 6-3 win for NM State while Flores came out on top 6-2, 6-2.
Â
The Aggies will have a few days to rest and train before they head west down I-10 for the Arizona Invitational, Sept. 23-25
