Huggins Fires His Way into WAC Player of the Week

NM State men’s basketball junior Braxton Huggins was named WAC Player of the Week after averaging 29 points last week.

DENVER – New Mexico State men's basketball guard Braxton Huggins was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week Monday morning after averaging 29 points in the conference opening weekend last week.

This is the first-career weekly honor for the Bakersfield, Calif., native after dropping a career-high 31 points at UMKC in the WAC opener thanks to a career-tying six 3-pointers. Huggins continued his hot hand two days later at Chicago State, pouring in 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting, five of which came from beyond the arc.

In addition, Huggins was also named the College Sports Madness Player of the Week. This is the third WAC weekly honor for NM State and the fourth accolade with CSM.

At weekend's end, Huggins committed just one turnover and shot 56-percent from the floor, 52-percent from beyond the arc and 90-percent from the line with three rebounds per game and 2 dimes per contest. Huggins has now scored 24-plus points in four of the last six games.

The hot hand from Huggins stretched NM State's win-streak to 13 games – tying Oregon for the fourth-longest active win-streak in the nation. The 15-2 overall record nears the best record in program history since 1993-94 when the team started year 16-1 before dropping its second game.

NM State's three-game homestand begins this Thursday, Jan. 12, when it entertains Grand Canyon for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Fans can catch four of the remaining seven WAC games in the Pan American Center for just $50 dollars with the Four for $50 WAC Mini-Pack by calling the Pan Am Center ticket office at 575-646-1420 or in person.
