ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico State women's tennis team completed the first day of action at Halloween Howl tournament on Friday.
Â
Doubles action opened up in favor of
Yadira Rubio and
Lindsay Harlas when they took down New Mexico's pair of Danielle Quevedo and Diana Wong 6-4. However, the Lobos took the next two doubles matches.
Â
In singles play, Rubio claimed a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory over NAU's Cora-Lynn Von Dungern after dropping her first set.
Eli Arnaudova also picked up a win for the Aggies, besting the Lumberjacks' Ellie Millard 6-4, 6-4 in the fifth singles flight match.
Â
Vanessa Valdez couldn't fend off NAU's Brandi Walker in the top singles flight and fell 6-4, 6-4 while
Rebecca Keijzerwaard lost 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 despite taking the second set to force a third. A first set 7-6 (7) victory in the first set was not enough for Harlas as the Las Cruces native dropped the following two sets to her counterpart 6-1, 6-4.
Helena Colvee didn't get a good jump on Worthy Goldman of NAU and fell 6-0, 6-0.
Â
New Mexico State turns the page and now turns its focus towards Northern Arizona for doubles action and Battle of I-10 rival UTEP in singles. Day two of the Halloween Howl is set to begin at 10 a.m. with doubles followed by singles action.
