LOGAN, Utah – New Mexico State cross country competed on the Steve & Dona Reeder Cross Country Course at NCAA Mountain Championship on Friday. The men's team placed 14th while the women's squad finished in 18th.
"Both the men and the women had solid showings compared to previous years," assistant cross country coach Joseph Rath said. "The men's team especially had a great showing by coming in 14th. Our top-five runners were switched around again. I'm proud of Eli [Kosgei] finishing as our top runner in the final meet of his senior year."
In the men's 10k race, Eli Kosgei clocked in first for NM State, placing 65th with a time of 32:09.9. Abel Ketema followed the senior, placing 66th with a time of 32:10.0. Jereme Santistevan (32:39.2) and Jose Silva (32:43.1) finished in 83rd and 85th, respectively. Aaron Valenzuela was the final New Mexico State runner to score as he finished in 90th with a time of 32:46.9.
"The women's team improved quite a bit from last season. The biggest difference is that this is the deepest I've seen the Mountain Regional," Rath said. "The one I was most impressed with on the women's side was Jess Dominguez. As a freshman, she did a really good job in her first NCAA Regional race."
On the women's side, Crissey Amberg finished first for the Aggies when she clocked in at 21:35.5 for 70th place in the 6k race. Dominguez crossed the finish line next for NM State, posting a time of 21:52.3 for 85th place. Julia Yescas clocked in for 105th when she recorded a time of 22:15.8. Elana Kresl (22:22.3) and Sydney Salas (22:25.1) rounded out the Aggie squad, finishing in 108th and 109th, respectively.
"We've finished what was an impressive season for us but I am excited for what's to come for both the men's and women's programs," Rath said.
