LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State cross country travels to Logan, Utah, for the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 10. The women's 6k race takes place at 10:15 a.m. (MT) followed by the men's 10k race at 11:15 a.m.
"The Mountain Regional for cross country consistently has the top teams in the country and is a region that has very solid teams from top to bottom. This is the toughest competition we face all year and it is a great measuring stick for our team's progress," assistant cross country coach
Joseph Rath said. "As a distance runner, it's exciting to get into a big pack of very talented runners to help get the best out of you in the race."
Traveling for the men's team this weekend is
Dylan Godfrey,
Abel Ketema,
Eli Kosgei,
James McLain,
Jereme Santistevan,
Jose Silva and
Aaron Valenzuela. Valenzuela was the top finisher for NM State at the Western Athletic Conference Championship, leading the team to a third place finish overall and posting a time of 24:13 when he finished in fifth.
On the women's team,
Cassey Amberg,
Crissey Amberg,
Jess Dominguez,
Nichole Gomez,
Elana Kresl,
Sydney Salas,
Leah Salazar and
Julia Yescas are set to compete in the meet. The squad comes into the race after winning the Aggies' first WAC Women's Cross Country Championship since 2009. Cr. Amberg finished as the runner-up in the women's race as she clocked in at 17:02.
"We're coming off our best conference finishes on both sides in the last few years and we want to cap off the season with a very strong finish at Regionals," Rath said.
Utah State serves as the host site for the meet. The New Mexico State squad takes the Steve & Dona Reeder Cross Country Course on Friday morning, when the women's team kicks off the meet at 10:15 a.m. with the men's race to follow. Admission is free for all fans in attendance.
