NM State women’s basketball faces tough competition against the Wildcats and the Waves

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's basketball team travel to face Arizona and Pepperdine in a pair of challenging road contests. The Aggies take on the Wildcats on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. MT before facing the Waves on Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m.

LOOKING AT THE WILDCATS
Arizona enters Thursday's matchup looking to snap a six-game skid as the Wildcats post a 2-6 record for the season. The lone home win for Arizona came in the season opener when the team defeated Iona College 71-58.
 
In the Wildcats loss to Northern Arizona, JaLea Bennett recorded 13 points and seven rebounds while Kat Wright also scored in double-figures for the Wildcats as she also poured on 13 points. Sam Thomas posted a double-double with 10 rebounds and 13 points in the loss.
 
During the last meeting in 2016, the Aggies fell 74-63 in an overtime battle between the teams. In her 40 minutes of play, Brooke Salas tallied five rebounds and five points. Zaire Williams racked up six points and four assists in the loss.
 
RIDING THE WAVE
Pepperdine comes into the contest with a 4-5 overall record and a 2-1 record at the Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves post a 1-1 record against Western Athletic Conference opponents with a 65-62 loss to Seattle U and a 71-44 victory over Utah Valley.
 
In the team's last game, Pepperdine fell 71-61 at Weber State. Yasmine Robinson-led the team with 21 points in the loss. Tylinn Cater grabbed 15 rebounds, just three short of her career high.
 
The teams squared off at the Pan American Center during the 2016-17 season with New Mexico State coming away with the victory. Salas recorded a double-double against the Waves that included 20 points and 12 rebounds.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Aggies took down Battle of I-10 rival UTEP 76-68 at the Pan American Center in their last game. NM State played aggressively on defense and posted 21 takeaways which gave the squad the edge over the Miners in points off turnovers, 23-7. Three New Mexico State players scored in double-figures including Salas, who led the team with a career-high 29 points. Gia Pack added 15 points and a team-high six rebounds in the win while Williams scored 14.
 
UP NEXT
Following the pair of contests, the Aggies remain on the road when they travel for the Long Beach Classic, Dec. 20-21. New Mexico State's first contest pits the team against Northeastern on Wednesday, December 20, at 6 p.m. MT.
