DAVIS, Calif. – The New Mexico State men's tennis team didn't have the start it wanted in the opening round of the Golden State Invitational on Friday, falling to Portland 7-0.

The Aggie No. 3 doubles team of
Enrique Asmar and
Mauri Benitez opened things up with a 6-4 win for NM State. However, Portland hung on to its slim lead on courts No. 2 and No. 1, winning 7-5 and 7-6, respectively, to capture the doubles point.

The Pilots' momentum carried over into singles action as UOP took down New Mexico State one-by-one in order besides on courts Nos. 5 and Nos. 6 where it was flip-flopped.

NM State will now play Saint Mary's on Saturday at 11 a.m. (MT) after both teams lost on the opening day of the Golden State Invitational hosted by Sacramento State and UC Davis.
