TUCSON, ARIZ. -  The New Mexico State track and field team put up impressive performances on Friday as the Aggies competed in the first day of the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson, Ariz. Many athletes had top five finishes in the meet including four who placed first in their respective events.
"We were pleased with many of the performances," co-interim head coach Larry Carmichael said. "We're looking forward to seeing what opening times and distances we can put up tomorrow."
LaShya Cole had the top performance in the long jump. Cole jumped 5.92 meters (19-5.00), a personal best, to take home first place.
Kayli Farmer and Alyssa Covarrubia made the podium in the javelin. Farmer finished second as she threw 42.39 meters (139- 0.75). Covarrubia placed third (39.45 meters, 129-5).
In the shot put, Yemisi Oroyinyin took fifth in the competition. The sophomore threw 13.54 meters (44-05). Her teammate Akuadasuo Ezenyilimba placed third in the hammer throw as she threw a best 52.46 meters (172-1.25).
On the track, Cassey Amberg placed first in the 5000 meters as the junior clocked in at 18:08.50. Stephanie Quintero followed for second place in the event with a time of 18:30.97. Freshman Nichole Gomez placed fourth with a time of 18:45.34.
Crissey Amberg won the 1500 meters as she clocked in at 4:35.11. Freshman Julia Yescas placed fifth in the event (4:44.10). Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Elana Kresl and Corinne Hanson competed in the 2000 meters steeplechase. Kresl finished in first as she clocked in at 7:20.77. Hanson followed in fourth as she clocked in with a time of 7:45.29.
