DENVER – New Mexico State men's tennis junior
Christofer Goncalves earned this week's Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week after going undefeated last weekend and led NM State to a third-place finish at the HEB Invitational.
Â
Goncalves first gave NM State the 4-0 sweep of host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, clinching the doubles point and match point for the Aggies – both at the No. 1 spot. In New Mexico State's loss to Arizona, the Barquisimeto, Venezuela, native was one point away from beating the Wildcats' Shoti Meparidze but left his match unfinished leading 6-3, 5-4. Goncalves then wrapped up his weekend with a three set thriller against Louisiana's top singles player and pulled out with the 7-5, 36, 6-4.
This is the fifth conference honor for NM State this season and fourth for Goncalves. He previously won on the week of Feb. 7. The Aggies have now earned three player of the week honors during the dual season – two of which belong to Goncalves.
The Aggies are headed to California for the Golden State Invitational hosted by UC Davis and Sacramento State, beginning this Friday, March 10, against Portland at 11 a.m. (MT).
