DENVER – New Mexico State's Kelsey Horton was named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This is Horton's second weekly honor this season and the third of her career.
"Kelsey continues to grow and mature as a hitter," associate head coach Catherine Heifner said. "She finds ways to come through for the team and brings along underclassmen. She did an excellent job setting the tone for us this weekend."
Horton hit .600 with four extra-base hits and six RBIÂ last week against Seattle U. She also recorded an impressive 1.600 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base clip. Horton's most impressive performance came in the Aggies 14-6 victory over SU as she tied the program and WAC records by hitting three home runs in the game. She hit homers in three straight at-bats, becoming the first WAC player to do so in league play since 2010. Horton leads the league with a .632 batting average in conference action.
"Hitting three home runs in a game is rare for anyone at any level," Heifner said. "We are proud to call her an Aggie."
New Mexico State continues conference play as the Aggies host UMKC in a three-game series. NM State opens the series against the Roos on Friday, April 14, with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. (MT).
