DENVER – The New Mexico State women's golf team was selected to win the 2017 Western Athletic Conference title. In a vote by the league's head coaches, which no one could vote for their own team, the Aggies were unanimously chosen to win their fourth consecutive WAC women's golf championship.
NM State won the 2016 title by 16 strokes and
Kennedie Montoya captured the individual title and the team took home the 2015 championship by 34 strokes. The Aggies received all six possible first-place votes for 36 points. Seattle U finished second with 30 points, followed by UMKC in third with 26 points. Utah Valley was predicted to finish in fourth with 19 points, just ahead of UTRGV in fifth with 18 points. CSU Bakersfield received 11 points for sixth and Chicago State rounded out the group in seventh with seven points.
At the end of the regular season, the Aggies have finished in the top-10 in seven of their nine tournaments this year. The strong play features two second-place finishes and two first-place victories.
The team has seen three individuals earn four WAC women's golfer of the week honors this spring. This is led by
Pun Chanachai with two honors and
Kristen Cline and
Camille Orito each receiving one. Across eight golfers NM State has 12 top-10 finishes and 25 finishes in the top-25 for individuals this season.
The 2017 WAC Women's Golf Championship sends New Mexico State to Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kan., April 19-21.
