LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State football team joined country music legend Garth Brooks to host his Teammates for Kids Foundation to host a youth camp Saturday morning at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
Â
"It's about respect, it's about courage," Brooks said. "Probably one of these kids will end up playing sports somewhere? All of them will be human beings that'll contribute to this nation and what it believes in. So you betcha. It's what it's all about. Their families are their core and make sure you drive home those kinds of thoughts."
Â
A host NM State football staff members and student-athletes were on hand to participate in the free community event that saw about 60-plus youth from the Las Cruces area. The youth camp is centered on teaching not only football skills, but developing leadership and characters traits that they'll use in live.
Â
"It was an unbelievable experience for our guys to have an opportunity to do this today," assistant head coach
Oliver Soukup said. "I don't know who had more fun, our players/staff or the campers. What a blast for everyone involved and a big thank you to Teammates for Kids and Garth Brooks for involving us."
Â
The Teammates for Kids Foundation is co-founded by Brooks and has hosted a youth sports camp at every stop on his world tour, which is on its second day in Las Cruces. Brooks' tour will wrap up the three-day stay in the City of Crosses on Sunday, April 9.
Â
The foundation was originally founded in 1999 and is funded 100-percent by private donations, which allows the foundation to donate all of its proceeds straight to the children. The camps for Brooks are operated by Pro Camps, which has garnered the support from professional athletes and celebrities alike throughout the country.
