LAS CRUCES, N.M. –
Stijn de Haan and
Enrique Asmar of the New Mexico State men's tennis team were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team on Thursday.
Â
This is the first honor for both sophomores from CoSIDA and the first time NM State has had a player earn the award since Jim Brouleau in 2011.
Â
The CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams are nominated and voted on by members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America and has been recognizing student-athletes for their academic achievements since 1952.
Â
A native of Veldhoven, Netherlands, de Haan currently owns a 4.0 grade point average in aerospace engineering. The 6-4 righty wrapped up his sophomore campaign 19-6 overall in singles play and 5-0 in WAC play. He then teamed up with
Mauri Benitez to go 17-11 at season's end with an 11-7 record in dual play.
Â
Asmar sports a 3.964 GPA in mechanical engineering and was one of four Aggies to conclude the 2016-17 season with at least 20 singles victories. The Barranquilla, Colombia product finished the year 20-7 in singles play and 4-1 in conference play, splitting time between the No. 5 (7-4) and No. 6 (6-0) slots.
Â
Both Asmar and de Haan were recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with its Scholar-Athlete award as freshmen as well.
Â
Asmar and de Haan helped NM State claim its third-straight Western Athletic Conference regular-season title this season and were just short of capturing its third-straight WAC Championship trophy. De Haan was named to the First-Team All-WAC team and Asmar was named to the second-team while de Haan also added second-team honors in doubles play with Benitez.
Â
First-team Academic All-District™ honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America® honorees will be selected later this month.
