EDINBURG, TEXASÂ -Â New Mexico State track and field competed at the 2017 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. NM State sits in fifth place heading into the final day of competition.
"We had a solid team effort across both finals and qualifying events," interim co-head coach Larry Carmichael said. "Kayli Farmer and LaShya Cole led the charge with a Conference Championship and an All-Conference First Team, respectively."
On the field, Kayli Farmer gave the Aggies their first points of the meet when she won gold in the javelin throw with a mark of 45.27m (148-06). Alyssa Covarrubia (38.01m,124-8) and Alexandra Napier Winebark (34.57m, 113-5) placed fourth and eighth, respectively, in the javelin. LaShya Cole placed third in the long jump when the junior jumped 5.83m (19-1.5) on her third attempt. In the shot put, Taylor Stutely placed fifth when she threw 12.91m (42-4.25).
On the track, Crissey Amberg finished in first in the 1,500m preliminaries with a time of 4:42.95. Julia Yescas also qualified for the event finals with a time of 4:45.71. Elana Kresl placed seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase final and finished with a time of 11:39.72. Ashleyann Hall placed first in the 800m preliminaries with a time of 2:13.73.
Arniesha Mitchell qualified for event finals in the 100m hurdles when she finished eighth with a time of 14.41. A pair of Aggies qualified for the 100m finals. Lashira Tremble placed fifth with a time of 11.97 and Tanisha Scott placed sixth, clocking in at 11.99. Katara Nelson placed second in the 400m preliminaries when she clocked in at 55.80. Nia Garcia qualified for event finals in the 400m hurdles as she finished with a time of 1:07.04.
"We had a lot of people qualify for final events tomorrow on the track," Carmichael said. "Some of our strong field events are coming up as well. We expect to see our point total climb across the day tomorrow.
New Mexico State closes out the WAC Championships on Saturday. The Aggies take the field for the hammer throw at 10 a.m. (MT). Track events for NM State begin at 4:05 p.m. with the women's 4x400m relay.
