Farmer Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships

Kayli Farmer broke the school record in the javelin and qualified for the NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas - New Mexico State's Crissey Amberg and Kayli Farmer competed at the NCAA 2017 Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminaries at the Mike A. Myers Stadium  on Thursday. Amberg finished 38th in the 1500m run while Farmer qualified for the NCAA Championships with a ninth place finish in the javelin throw.

"We are extremely proud of both Kayli Farmer and Crissey Amberg," interim co-head coach Larry Carmichael said.

Farmer set a new school record in the javelin throw when she threw 48.63m (159-6) on her third attempt. The Aztec, N.M, native sat in first place with one flight left to throw. Farmer placed ninth and became the first Aggie to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Erin Streater in 2006..

"She was seeded 22nd going into the meet. We knew that she would need to break the school record to qualify for the NCAA Championships," Carmichael said. "Her goal coming into the meet was to win her flight. By doing so, Kayli knew she would be in a good spot with one flight to go. She accomplished her goal and I couldn't be more proud."

Amberg ran 4:35.26 in the 1500m to place seventh in her heat and 38th overall.

Farmer advances to the 2017 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. The four-day meet begins on June 7, at Historic Hayward Field.
