Track and Field Gets Set for WAC Championships

NM State was voted the favorites to win it all in the pre-championship coaches poll.

LAS CRUCES, N.M.  -  New Mexico State track and field travels to Edinburg, Texas, for the 2017 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, May 10.

In a vote by the leagues head coaches, NM State was chosen to win the WAC Women's Outdoor Championship. The Aggies received 41 points and three first place votes. Grand Canyon and UMKC tied for second in the voting with 40 points each. The Lopes received two first place votes and the Roos received one. In fourth place, with 39 points and two first place votes, was Utah Valley. UTRGV placed fifth in the poll with 25 points, followed by Seattle U with 19. Chicago State and CSU Bakersfield tied for seventh to round out the women's poll with 10 points each.

"We are looking forward to finishing the regular season on a high note at the WAC Championships," interim co-head coach Larry Carmichael said. "We feel our training has gone well as of late. This team is ready to compete."

Kayli Farmer enters the meet having won the WAC Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honor four times this season. She took first in the javelin throw at four meets and set a new personal record (47.94m, 157-3) at the Steve Scott Invitational. Crissey Amberg won the WAC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honor once this year. This season she broke the school record in the 1,500m when she clocked in at 4:25.37 at the Bryan Clay Invite.

The Aggies start the meet with the women's 10,000m run on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. (MT). Field events begin on Friday with the men's hammer throw at 10 a.m. The first field event for NM State is the javelin throw at 1 p.m. (MT).
