LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The 2017 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Region teams were announced for all eight regions on Wednesday afternoon. New Mexico State second baseman
Brent Sakurai was named to the Midwest All-Region Second-Team.
The teams were voted on by members of the ABCA and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Division I All-America Committee.
Sakurai's senior campaign saw him lead the team with a .377 batting average, as well as a .571 slugging and .427 on-base percentage. The middle infielder also added 28 extra-base hits, including nine triples which set a new single-season record for NM State and led the nation.
At season's end, Sakurai's stellar numbers ranked him in the top-10 in the Western Athletic Conference in seven offensive categories. Along with batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and triples, the Hawaii native also ranked among the league's best in hits (87), runs scored (50) and total bases (132).
The senior led NM State to a 35-22 overall record in which he was one of only two Aggies to play in all 57 of the team's games.
