@NMStateFootball Training Camp: Day One

The New Mexico State football program kicked off day one of training camp in preparation for the 2017-18 season

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State football program began training camp on Monday in preparation for the 2017-18 season.

At the start of camp, head coach Doug Martin said, "I'm really excited about where these guys are at heading into camp. We've got a lot of experience returning and we are looking forward to installing plays at a faster rate on both offense and defense."

A strong returning core for the Aggies is under center with their starting quarterback, Tyler Rogers, and fellow letterman, Nick Jeanty, leading the way for the offense. The quarterback position also welcomes in three newcomers in Cameron Matthews, Josh Adkins and Jeremy Hodge, who are all freshmen.

On day one of camp, the group was quickly integrated into drills with their running backs, wide receivers and offensive line.

"Our top two quarterbacks have a lot of experience (Rogers and Jeanty) and so we are able to install things very quickly with them. They handled the offense really well today," said Martin.

The veteran leadership is recognized on the team as they look to a familiar face to excel on this Aggie offense. Players and coaches alike realize what the experience brings to the table.

Former NM State quarterback and current tight ends coach Chase Holbrook said, "Our guys look at him (Rogers) and know he's been around and really knows the ropes. I think he's the perfect guy for what we do on this offense."

NM State relied heavily on the quarterback position in 2016 as they averaged 244.9 yards per game through the air with 22 touchdowns over 12 games. The total yardage from the Aggie quarterbacks ranked fourth in the Sun Belt and the touchdown mark was good for second in the conference.

Day two of training camp for the NM State football team begins on Tuesday, August 1.
