The Aggie men’s tennis team competed well on both fronts Friday.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men's tennis team wrapped up its first day at the Wildcat Invitational on Friday while Christofer Goncalves grabbed a win in the consolation round at the ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif.

Goncalves bested St. John's Luka Sucevic 6-1, 6-3 at the Malibu Racquet Club in the men's singles consolation round. The Barquisimeto, Venezuela, product was 7-for-7 in game point opportunities and will face UNLV's Alexandr Cozbinov on Saturday at approximately 3 p.m. (MT).

Meanwhile, the rest of the team competed at the Wildcat Invitational on Friday. In singles play, all three Aggies in the Cardinal singles draw dropped their opening match. Of the three, Sergi Espias advanced to the quarterfinal round of consolation play after defeating Ignacio Martinez of San Diego State 6-4, 3-6, 10-3.

In the Cardinal North & South draws, Luis Flores will face Grand Canyon's Lorenzo Fucile while Stijn de Haan is paired against Martinez, who Espias defeated on Friday.

In the Navy singles draw, Louis Menard, Mauri Benitez and Enrique Asmar all advanced to the round of eight. Playing in his first match in the Crimson & White, Menard took care of business against Northern Arizona's Chris Steele and won 6-4, 6-2 while Benitez ousted Arizona Christian's Enzo Douillac 6-4, 6-1. Asmar had to work for his victory, but eventually fought off GCU's Gregoire Balenci 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.

Menard and Benitez could meet up in the quarterfinals should they both beat their foes, who coincidentally are both from Grand Canyon, on Saturday. It could also be an all-WAC quarterfinal should Asmar defeat SDSU's Nick Mitchel and GCU's Lucas Grego defeat his opponent from Arizona coupled with wins from Menard and Benitez.

Alejandro Rosas Garcia took down the top-seeded player, Adi Zilberstein (NAU), in the White singles draw 6-5, 6-3 and is set to face ACU's Scott Wheeler on Saturday. Yusuke Nishitani was bested in a three-set thriller, falling 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 on Friday as the No. 2-seed in the flight.

In the Cardinal doubles draw, de Haan and Benitez found their fate as they'll take on Arizona's duo of Andres Reyes and Carlos Hassey after receiving a bye round on Friday. Playing together for the first time this season, Flores and Menard were defeated by Northern Arizona's pair 7-5. The two will now take on Arizona Christian's pair on Saturday in the consolation bracket.

With a bye in the opening round of the Navy doubles draw, Asmar and Espias got a chance to scout their foes from Fresno State. The Aggie pair and FSU's duo of Bailey Gong and Henrique Osorio will meet on the court at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The NM State pair of Nishitani and Rosas Garcia easily advanced to the semifinals when they defeated NAU's pair 6-1. The two will square off against the Lopes' pair of Lucas Grego and Freddie Grant.
