ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's indoor track and field team concluded the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational at the ABQ Convention Center on Saturday. Three Aggies set new personal records during the second day of competition.
"We had a solid start this weekend. We have a lot of work to do in order to achieve our goals this season, but for the most part, we competed with great effort, " head coach
Doug Reynolds said. "As our training continues to develop towards the peak of the season, and as we learn how to more effectively execute competition plans, I fully expect our team to round into shape and achieve the goals we set for ourselves this championship season."
In the shot put,
Yemisi Oroyinyin threw a new personal best when she placed eighth in the event with a mark of 14.42m (47-3.75).
Hannah Smith was the top finisher for NM State in the triple jump as she placed 10
th with a mark of 11.68m (38-4)..
On the track,
Nia Garcia clocked in at 8.95 for a new personal record in the 60m hurdles. She finished in 13
th while
Arniesha Mitchell placed 25
th in the event when she finished with a time of 9.22.
Tanisha Scott set her personal best in the 60m dash when she ran 7.72 to claim ninth place.
In the mile,
Leah Salazar (5:31.18) and
Nicolette Pacheco (5:31.57) finished back-to-back to place and 21
st and 22
nd, respectively. For the 400m race,
Dominique Joiner clocked in at 1:00.98, placing 42
nd. The 4x400m relay team that included Mitchell, Scott, Joiner, and
Keyarha Wilson placed 12th overall when they finished with a time of 3:59.37.
"We had several lifetime personal-best performances right out of the gate," Reynolds said. "That is a great sign for where we are in our preparation."
For their next meet, the Aggies travel back to Albuquerque, N.M., for the New Mexico Team Invitational on Saturday, Jan 27.
