Aggies Find Success at New Mexico Team Invitational

Many athletes set new personal records as the team finished competition in Albuquerque, N.M.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's track and field team competed at the New Mexico Team Invitational at the ABQ Convention Center on Saturday. Both on the track and on the field, many Aggies set new personal records at the meet.
 
"Our team really elevated our level of execution this week," head coach Doug Reynolds said. "Our coaches have specific goals for each week of our training process. If we want to be championship ready, the key is that we execute these goals in competition. We raised the bar this week."
 
Tanisha Scott posted a time of 7.57 in 60m dash preliminaries to place sixth and qualify for the event finals. The time was a new personal record for the senior and ranks third all-time in program history. She finished in seventh in the event finals, clocking in at 7.61. Scott also picked up another personal record when she placed fifth in the 200m with a time of 24.61. The time ranks sixth in the NM State record books.
 
Nichole Gomez placed ninth in the 3,000m race, clocking in at 10:45.29 for a new personal record. In the mile, Elana Kresl took home eighth when she finished with a time of 5:19.47.
 
In the 60m hurdles, Nia Garcia (8.83) and Arniesha Mitchell (8.77) finished in the top eight, qualifying for the event finals. In the finals, Mitchell ran 8.80 while Garcia clocked in at 9.17, which placed the pair in fifth and seventh, respectively. Garcia's preliminary time was a new personal best.
 
On the field, Yemisi Oroyinyin placed seventh in the weight throw when she posted a mark of 14.84m (48-8.25) in the event. Oroyinyin also placed seventh in the shot put when she threw a 13.55m (44-5.5).
 
Hannah Smith claimed third with a new personal best in the triple jump when she posted a mark of 12.01m (39-5). She currently ranks third all-time in the New Mexico State indoor record books. In the long jump, Smith was just off her personal best, jumping 5.26m (17-3.25) to place 10th. Jocelyn Jordan also competed in the triple jump and finished in seventh with a mark of 11.08m (36-4.25).
 
The 4x400m relay, which included Scott, Mitchell, Dominique Joiner and Keyarha Wilson, clocked in with a time of 3:58.44 to claim fifth place.
 
For their next meet, the Aggies again travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for the New Mexico Classic which is set to begin Friday, Feb. 2.
