LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After a historic week on the hardwood, New Mexico State men's basketball senior
Jemerrio Jones was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week as well as the College Sports Madness National Mid-Major Player of the Week.
Â
This is the second weekly honor for Jones and the sixth honor for the Aggies. Of the 14 weeks of award being handed out, NM State has won nearly half of them between Jones and
Zach Lofton.
Â
Jones joins Aggie legends Sam Lacey and Billy Joe Price as the only players to record 20 rebound in three or more games in a single-season at NM State. He is also the only player in program history to pull down 20 rebounds in three-consecutive games.
Â
He garnered the weekly honor after averaging 16.5 points and 20.0 rebounds last weekend, which allowed NM State to stay undefeated in league play at 9-0. The 6-5 forward opened the week with six points and 20 rebounds in a 69-43 rout of CSU Bakersfield Thursday night.
Â
Jones then willed the Aggies to a come from behind 74-70 victory against Grand Canyon, scoring 27 points with 20 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the season. The senior kept New Mexico State within striking distance of the Lopes in the first half with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Down 40-34 at half and trailed as much as 13 points, it was just the second time this season the Aggies trailed at half since doing so at then No. 21/22 Saint Mary's in the second game of the year.
Â
Over the weekend, the senior averaged 16.5 points and 20.0 rebounds on top of his 1.5 steals and 1.5 assists helped guide NM State to its 11th-straight win and remain undefeated in WAC play, 9-0.
Â
To put into perspective how difficult what he did was, per Stats Inc. and ESPN Stats & Info, Jones is the only Division I player to record 20 rebounds in three-consecutive games dating back to 1997.
Â
New Mexico State has a critical week ahead as it hits the road for a pair of games against Utah Valley, who is tied for second in the league standings at 6-3 with NM State's Saturday opponent Seattle U. A sweep at both will secure the No. 1 seed for the upcoming WAC Tournament. Both games for the Aggies can be seen on the WAC Digital Network.
