TUCSON, Ariz. – The New Mexico State women's track and field team competed in the first day of the Willie Williams Classic at Arizona's Roy P. Drachman Stadium on Friday.
The Aggies dominated in the 5,000m as the team posted four of the top-five times in the race.
Stephanie Quintero led the way for the NM State squad as she placed second with a time of 18:23.30.
Karolin Klumb followed the junior by clocking in at 18:24.79 for third. Freshmen
Kelli Kirkpatrick (18:33.50) and Ocean Stevens (18:36.78) rounded out the Aggie pack placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Corinne Hanson was the lone New Mexico State runner to race in the 3000m steeplechase and the sophomore placed first when she clocked in at 11:24.06. In the 200m dash,
Lashira Tremble placed seventh when she posted a time of 24.42 in the event.
NM State also saw success in 1500m with three runners placing in the top-10.
Sydney Salas finished in sixth for the Aggies, posting a time of 4:44.10 for a new personal record.
Cassey Amberg (4:46.09) and
Julia Yescas (4:47.09) followed closely behind, placing seventh and eighth, respectively.
On the field,
Taniya Mitchell placed third in the hammer throw when she posted a new personal best of 51.66m (169-6) on her fourth throw. Her mark puts the junior in fifth all-time at New Mexico State in the event.
Yemisi Oroyinyin took home sixth in the shot put after recording a mark of 14.38m (47-2.25).
Aubrey Salas led the way in the javelin, placing seventh with a best mark of 36.39m (119-4).
Alyssa Covarrubia followed just behind the freshman when she placed eighth by throwing 36.36m (119-3).
Nia Garcia posted a solid performance in the long jump, finishing in seventh with a mark of 5.42m (17-9.5).
