KINGSVILLE, Texas – The New Mexico State women's tennis team edged Texas A&M – Kingsville on the road Wednesday evening 5-4 at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
Playing under Division II rules, each match counted as a point – including each doubles contest.
The Javelinas (6-8) struck first with an 8-3 victory on court No. 3 of doubles play before New Mexico State (5-10) took courts No. 2 and No. 1 within moments of one another 8-4 and 9-7 – respectively – for the 2-1 lead.
The match was tied up at 2-2 in singles play when
Eli Arnaudova was bested at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-2.
Rebecca Keijzerwaard gave NM State the 3-2 lead after she battled past Texas A&M – Kingsville's Vic Romanovskaia 6-3, 7-6 at the top singles slot.
Lindsay Harlas proceeded to give the Aggies a 4-2 lead with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles.
Laura Montalvo brought the Javelinas within 4-3 of New Mexico State before
Yadira Rubio clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court No. 4 against Julia Rauer. Texas A&M – Kingsville took No. 6 singles despite
Helena Colvee's valiant effort, 7-5, 4-6, 12-10.
New Mexico State will stay on the road this weekend as it heads to Edinburg, Texas, to start Western Athletic Conference play. First up for the Aggies will be the Cougars of Chicago State on Saturday, March 24, before taking on the Lopes of Grand Canyon on Sunday, March 25. Both matches are slated to begin at 8 a.m. (MT).
