DENVER – For the first time this season,
Kelsey Horton was named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. The award the fifth weekly honor of Horton's career as an Aggie. Horton was also named the College Sports Madness National Softball Field Player of the Week for her exceptional performance during the past week's action.
The junior played an important role in leading NM State to a 3-1 record last week. Horton hit .750 with a double, four home runs, seven runs scored and eight RBI. She posted an impressive 2.375 slugging percentage as she had an extra base hit in all four games and multiple RBIs in each contest. Horton also posted an .846 on-base percentage as she also walked three times and hit by a pitch twice.
Horton began the week with a solo homer against rival New Mexico and in the series opener against CSU Bakersfield, she began her first plate appearance with a timely two-run home run that tied the game in the first inning. In the second game against CSUB, the junior hit a pair of homers in her two at-bats. Horton closed out the series with the 'Runners by hitting an RBI double. She entered the week ranked 12th nationally with 12 home runs on the season.
Horton is the third Aggie to win WAC Hitter of the Week honors.
Fahren Glackin has won the award twice this season while sophomore
Nikki Butler has taken home the honor once.
Kayla Green has also receive recognition from the conference as she has won WAC Pitcher of the Week three times so far during her junior campaign.
NM State is back in action when the team travels to Grand Canyon for a three-game series. New Mexico State takes on the Lopes in a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 6 p.m. MT. The team closes out the series on Saturday with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
