@NMStateMTEN Set to Square Off Against No. 4 Stanford

The NM State men’s tennis team is headed to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on No. 4 Stanford this Saturday.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The three-time Western Athletic Conference champion New Mexico State men's tennis team is headed to The Farm this weekend for the first and second round action of the NCAA Tournament this weekend. The Aggies are slated to take on No. 4 Stanford this Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m. (MDT) inside the Taube Family Tennis Center.

Single-day tickets are $8 (adult) and $5 (student/youth/senior) for fans planning to attend. The box office will open 30 minutes before the first event on each day. Fans can also catch the game online via live-stream. The live-stream will also have live stats available on the feed.

This is the fifth time NM State has made the NCAA Tournament in program history (1997, 2000, 2015, 2016, 2018) and is also its third appearance in four years.

Stanford finished the season 21-3 overall and 7-1 in the Pac-12 while falling to USC 4-0 in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament. The 7-1 mark for the Cardinal was good for second-best in conference play, behind UCLA – who finished Pac-12 play undefeated at 8-0.

Tom Fawcett, who is ranked No. 9 in singles according to the ITA, leads Stanford in singles action with 19 wins at the top singles slot while Axel Geller, David Wilczynski and Sameer Kumar are second with 18 wins apiece. Both Geller (No. 83) and Kumar (No. 102) are also ranked in singles play according to the ITA. William Genesen has 16 wins to his name in singles action with Eric Fomba rounding out the double-digit winners with 14 victories.

The Cardinal No. 1 doubles team of Michael Genender and Kumar are 18-9 together this year in doubles and ranked No. 56 in the country by the ITA. Meanwhile, Fawcett and Geller are 16-overall together on court No. 2 for Stanford and ranked No. 32 in the country while Timothy Sah and Wilczynski check in at 14-5 together at No. 3 doubles.

As a team, the Aggies are 16-8 overall on the year and 4-1 in Western Athletic Conference action. NM State earned the WAC's automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament this past Sunday when it swept the tournament's top seed UMKC 4-0.

Seniors Christofer Goncalves and Sergi Espias lead the team with 25 wins apiece overall in singles action. However, Espias is 14-6 in dual action while Goncalves, who plays at the top singles position, is 12-4. The two-time Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year was also a perfect 5-0 in league play.

Mauri Benitez isn't far off from his teammates, checking in with a 24-10 overall mark in singles with a 12-8 record in dual action. Enrique Asmar has 22 wins to his name, 11 of which came in dual play, while freshman Louis Menard rounds out the 20-match winners with a 20-4 record in singles action to with his 14-1 mark in dual action. Stijn de Haan wraps up the list of double-digit winners in singles play with 17 wins – 10 of which have come in the dual season.

Should the Aggies complete the upset and advance to the second-round of the NCAA Tournament, they'll play the winner between No. 28 Duke and No. 38 Ole Miss on Sunday, May 13, at 3 p.m. (MT).
