LAWRENCE, Kan. – New Mexico State women's track and field continued competition at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Rock Chalk Park on Friday.
Yemisi Oroyinyin and
Alyssa Covarrubia posted top marks to take home the gold, helping the Aggies move into third place as a team.
Oroyinyin recorded a mark of 14.97m (49-1.5) on just her third attempt to take home the gold in the event. Her personal record ranks second all-time at New Mexico State.
Taylor Stutely (12.78m, 41-11.25) and
Taniya Mitchell (12.75m, 41-10) also competed in the event and finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Hannah Smith came away with a best mark of 5.89m (19-4) to take fifth in the long jump.
Covarrubia threw 42.09m (138-1) in the javelin to take first in the event.
Aubrey Salas followed closely behind in third when she threw 36.55m (119-11).
Kimberly Salinas recorded a mark of 36.16m (118-8) to finish in fourth.
Cierrah Kassetas (33.34m, 109-04) and
Shaylee Fuller (33.02m, 108-04) came away in seventh and eighth, respectively.
On the track,
Katara Nelson recorded the top time in the 100m when she clocked in at 11.35.
Lashira Tremble finished in fifth for the preliminaries, posting a time of 11.67 in the event. Nelson also came away the best time in the 200m (23.29) while Tremble (24.29) placed fourth overall in the event. In the 400m,
Tanisha Scott took fourth in the preliminaries when she clocked in at 57.83.
Camira Haughton also qualified for the event finals when she placed sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 59.42.
Leah Salazar placed third in the 800m preliminaries when she clocked in at 2:18.22.
Arniesha Mitchell (13.93) and
Nia Garcia (14.02) took third and fifth, respectively in the 100m hurdles. For the 3,000m steeplechase,
Corinne Hanson finished in sixth when she posted a time of 11:32.21.
The Aggies close their run at the conference championships on Saturday, May 12, with the hammer throw kicking things off at 10 a.m. MT. Fans can catch the action from Saturday's events on the WAC Digital Network.
