HORTON ADDS NFCA ALL-PACIFIC REGION HONOR TO MANTEL

NM State softball junior Kelsey Horton was named to the NFCA Pacific Region First-Team.

LOUISVILLE – New Mexico State softball infielder Kelsey Horton was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pacific Region First Team on Thursday.

This is the second-straight year the two-time Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year has earned NFCA All-Region honors, earning second-team honors as a sophomore. She is the just the sixth player in WAC history to earn multiple player of the year honors and the second Aggie to do so.

The San Clemente, Calif., product helped guide the Aggies their second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance after batting .636 with a 1.545 slugging-percentage to go with her three homers and 12 RBI while scoring six runs in the three games.

Horton's two-run bomb out to left field in the WAC Championship game gave her the program's all-time single-season home run record with 25 jacks while her 152 total bases was also a single-season record. Both of records were previously held by 2011 All-American Hoku Nohara – who was recently inducted into the US Bank NM State Athletics Hall of Fame this past February.

Nationally, Horton is ranked in the top-25 in several statistical categories and leads the country in home runs with 25 and home runs per game (0.49). In addition, she's also fourth in the NCAA with 64 RBI, third in total bases (152), seventh in slugging percentage (0.927) and 20th in runs per game (1.02).

As a junior, Horton's 54 career bombs rank her 13th nationally amongst active career leaders and eighth when compared to Division I players only. The Aggies' second baseman is also eighth when compared to her Division I peers with a career .793 slugging percentage. Her 403 total bases ranks her 18th best while her 170 RBI places her in 20th.

Horton and the Aggies are in the Tempe Regional for the 2018 NCAA Softball Tournament and are slated to face host eighth-seeded Arizona State on Friday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. (MST) local and 7:30 p.m. (MDT) at the Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium on ESPN3.
