Another @NMStateSoftball Season for the Record Books

The Aggies took home the WAC regular-season and tournament titles during their stellar run in 2018.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State softball team had another successful season which saw the Aggies finish the year at 29-24 overall and 11-4 in Western Athletic Conference play. NM State picked up its fourth-consecutive WAC regular-season title and added its second-straight WAC tournament title during the 2018 season.

The Aggies opened their 2018 campaign with back-to-back victories over then-ranked No. 17 Kentucky for the program's first win over a ranked opponent since April 6, 2015. Overall, the team came away with four wins against Power-5 opponents as NM State took down Big 12 foe Texas Tech on the road and eventual Big Ten tournament champion Minnesota at the NM State Softball Complex.

As a team, the Aggies posted a .506 slugging percentage to rank eighth in the NCAA. The team's 1.09 home runs per game put NM State in 13th nationally while the .311 batting average ranked 18th. New Mexico State averaged 1.47 doubles per game, which put the squad 22nd in the nation and the team's .391 on base percentage was good for 25th nationally.

Individually, Kelsey Horton ranked in the top-25 in several statistical categories and even led the country in home runs (25) and home runs per game (0.49) heading into the NCAA tournament. She closed out the season second in homers and home runs per game (0.47), third in the NCAA for RBI per game (1.21) and total bases (154), seventh in slugging percentage (0.911) and 22nd in runs per game (0.98).

During her junior campaign, Horton became the single-season leader in home runs and total bases. Both records were previously held by Hoku Nohara – who was recently inducted into the US Bank NM State Athletics Hall of Fame this past February. The junior's .911 slugging percentage was also second among the Aggie greats for a single season.

Horton ranks eighth in career slugging percentage (.789) and home runs (54) nationally. The two-time WAC Player of the Year needs just 11 long balls to become New Mexico State's outright all-time leader in the career homers.

The Aggies lost three impactful seniors in Amy Bergeson, Fahren Glackin and Rachel Rodriguez following the conclusion of the 2018 season. Bergeson closed out her career with a .310 batting average and played in all 53 games during her final season. Glackin led the team in triples during her senior campaign with five while also getting hit by a pitch 14 times, which ranks second in the New Mexico State record books for a single season. Rodriguez ended her career as an Aggie second in career hits (241) triples (11), stolen bases (83), and stolen base attempts (92).
