LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Game times have been finalized for the upcoming 2018 New Mexico State football schedule. The five games feature the Aggies in three evening games followed by two matinee contests to close out the home schedule.
Â
"I could not be more pleased with our 2018 schedule" said Director of Athletics
Mario Moccia. "Thanks to Deputy A.D.
Braun Cartwright and Gridiron CEO Dave Brown for their hard work. It is a competitive schedule against regional opponents as well as aspirational conferences. With the momentum from the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl win I expect record crowds for the upcoming season."
Â
NM State opens the season during week zero against Wyoming on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. MT, in Aggie Memorial Stadium. Week zero games are played the weekend prior to the full opening weekend of Division I football. The week zero contests open up the Thursday prior to Labor Day Weekend.
Â
The next home contest features New Mexico State playing host to Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico on Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. Following a road clash with rival UTEP on Sept. 22 and then the team's first bye week, the Aggies get set for a game against Liberty on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. This is the first-ever meeting between the Aggies and the Flames.
Â
"Liberty is a really well coached team," said head coach
Doug Martin. "Turner Gill does a great job as a head coach there. He's a first-class guy and a really good football coach with a strong program."
Â
The Aggies then take on a former Sun Belt opponent as the Crimson & White welcome Georgia Southern to Aggie Memorial Stadium for a game on Oct. 20 at 4Â p.m. NM State then closes out its home schedule hosting Alcorn State on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. New Mexico State holds a 1-0 record over the FCS opponent after a 45-10 win at home on Oct. 4, 2008.
Â
Martin commented on the FCS contest saying, "Getting an FCS opponent is huge for us because it's an advantage that many teams have had that we now gain. Those games are good for any team because it really helps us as we look to gain momentum from it."
Â
This is New Mexico State football's first season in transition to competing as an independent program. Schools who compete along with NM State as FBS independents are Army, BYU, Liberty, UMass and Notre Dame.
