Chili Davis enters his third season with the New Mexico State football program in 2020.
Davis coaches the inside receivers and serves as the assistant special teams coordinator, previously overseeing the tight ends during the 2018 campaign.
The Chester, Va., native was elevated to a full-time assistant coaching position after serving as an offensive graduate assistant during NM State's historic 2017 season. Davis, who worked primarily with the wide receivers, was part of the coaching staff that helped the Aggies snap their 57-year bowl drought and defeat Utah State, 26-20, in overtime in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl.
During that 2017 season, Davis coached the explosive NM State wide receivers unit to one of the best offensive outputs in program history. The Aggies' aerial attack saw 10 student-athletes make double-digit receptions and 10 student-athletes haul in a touchdown pass on the year.
Davis has overseen the development of some of the program's most accomplished pass catchers, including OJ Clark and Jaleel Scott, during his coaching tenure in Las Cruces.
Clark finished his Aggie career ranked third on the team's all-time receptions list with 201 and eighth on the all-time receiving yards leaderboard with 1,804. The Wichita Falls, Texas, native is one of just three NM State receivers to eclipse 200 career receptions (A.J. Harris - 269, Chris Williams - 246).
Scott, a junior-college product, quickly developed into the Aggies' top receiving threat under Davis' coaching. He posted 99 receptions for 1,362 yards (13.8 avg.) and 14 touchdowns during his two seasons in Las Cruces, earning All-Sun Belt First Team honors after ranking first in the conference in receiving touchdowns (9) and second in receiving yards (1,079) in 2017.
Scott, meanwhile, was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round (132nd overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, becoming the first Aggie chosen in the draft since the Jacksonville Jaguars took defensive back Jeremy Harris in the seventh round (208th overall) in 2013. The wideout was the highest Aggie selected in the draft since defensive back Davon House was picked up by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round (131st overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Before arriving at NM State, Davis spent the 2016 season at Fordham, where he coached the cornerbacks. The Rams finished 8-3 on the year, winning six of their last seven games.
Davis coached defensive back Jihaad Pretlow to second-team All-Patriot League honors during his lone season in the Bronx. Pretlow tallied 46 total tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss, a sack and an interception.
Davis spent the 2015 season at Louisiana Tech and served as an offensive graduate assistant on head coach Skip Holtz's staff, mainly working with the running backs. The Bulldogs went on to play in the New Orleans Bowl that year, defeating Arkansas State, 47-28, and finishing the season 9-4.
Davis, who graduated from Campbell in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in business administration, played defensive back for the Camels from 2008-11. He got his start in the coaching ranks in 2012, spending three seasons as an assistant to the head coach at his alma mater.
He is married to the former Kiandra Brooks.
