NM State Tennis Center

The NM State Tennis Center first opened on Nov. 21, 1987. It featured 20 courts including two stadium courts and an office building equipped with locker rooms. Over the years the facility gave way to the rigors of normal wear and team and was torn down.

The new state-of-the-art NM State Tennis Center opened for the 2006 spring dual match season and was relocated to its current position just south of Aggie Memorial Stadium. It features 12 post-tension concrete tennis courts with the best lighting system for any facility in the Southwest. The post-tension concrete courts are the finest hard courts in the world.

In the spring of 2007, construction began on the new clubhouse for the Tennis Center and it was completed in early July of the same year. This new 3,000 square foot clubhouse features a classroom, player lounge, locker rooms and offices. The classroom is equipped with desks and computers with internet connections for the student-athletes. The player lounge is an area where the Aggies can relax before and after practices and matches and it is equipped with a refrigerator and kitchen sink.

Over the course of the last three years, numerous improvements have been made to the facility to ensure it maintains a reputation as one of the best in the Southwest. Multiple updates to the clubhouse were made in 2018 and the following year upgrades such as an ice machine, ball machine and tennis backboard were made as well. In 2020, new windscreens and nets were installed on all 12 courts in conjunction with NM State being awarded a USTA Facility Recovery Grant as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. That same year, the facility became NM State's headquarters for the Wilson Recycled Balls Program. To date, over 5,000 used tennis balls have been recycled at the facility.

In addition to its role as the home venue for the NM State men's and women's tennis teams, the NM State Tennis Center has also hosted a multitude of events since 2018. Beginning that year, it was the host site for the USTA Southwest Southern NM Junior Slam tournament host site. Twelve Junior Slam tournaments have been played there since 2018 and in 2019 it became the host site for that year's USTA Southwest Southern NM Adult Level Two Tournament. It will again be a host site for the USTA New Mexico State Aggie Adult Open in the summer of 2021.

NM State Summer Tennis Camps held there in 2018 and 2019 have helped grow the popularity of the sport in and around the Las Cruces and El Paso areas.

The NM State Tennis Center has hosted multiple Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men's and Women's Tennis Tournament Championships, most recently in the spring of 2021. It has served as the host facility for the league's postseason tournament in 2008, 2016, 2017 and 2019 as well.Â
