Aggies Comeback Falls Short Against Miners

NM State hits a pair of home runs in the loss.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State softball fell 5-3 at home to I-10 rival UTEP on Wednesday. Kennedy Johnson and Victoria Castro each had a home run in the loss.

After three scoreless innings, UTEP took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. The Miners added two runs in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to jump out to a 5-0 lead over the Aggies.

In the bottom of the sixth, Johnson hit her second home run of the season to cut into the UTEP lead. Fahren Glackin doubled to keep the rally alive before Castro came to the plate. Castro hit her first homer of the season to score two runs.

The rally came up short, however, as the Aggies fell 5-3. Kayla Green started in the circle for New Mexico State. She pitched 5.2 innings and gave up three runs. Kelsey Horton was unable to keep her 13-game hitting streak alive in the loss. NM State moves to 4-10 with the loss.

New Mexico State looks to snap its nine-game losing streak when the Aggies travel to Las Vegas for the Rebel Classic hosted by UNLV. NM State faces DePaul for the second time this season in its tournament opener on March 9. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
